The TED puts pressure on the legs, and thus helps improve circulation and reduce the chances of blood clots. Those who have had recent surgery on their legs or who require large amounts of bed rest are often given a pair for this reason. How long and how tight the stockings are depends on the patient’s needs. In addition to this use, some are designed to help people with Lymphedema and others are meant for regular support. Some pairs are also fashioned with silver entwined within the elastic for protection against microbes.
Before being put to use, a doctor must assess the patient. The skin and the patient’s circulation are examined, and if they can safely use the Teds, a size and type are issued. The stockings are put on by folding the leg partly inside-out then slid up the leg. To be fully effective, they must be stretched fully over the leg with no creases or folds. The patient should avoid massaging or crossing their legs while in use and if they sit, their legs should be elevated.

If a person is at risk of clotting, they can have a pair Ted stockings prescribed to them. But, if they only require support, they can be purchased over the counter with out prescription. Since they look like socks or hosiery, there is little concern about their appearance for Ted Stockings.
